Jumping Stilts – Safety Gear
Safety Gear
When you’ve got a pair of jumping stilts, chances are you are going to end up on the floor at least once. Your desire to push the envelope further, jump higher, run faster and even perform the really cool tricks can’t always end with you on both feet, perfectly balanced. So if its going to happen, the least you can is make sure you are prepared. Most places that sell jumping stilts will also have the safety kit available as well. Sometimes its worth just checking around other on-line shops, as sometimes the stilt suppliers aren’t always to cheapest when it comes to this stuff.
Hand & Wrist protection.
Probably the first choice when it comes to protection – obviously any falls are likely to result in your hands hitting the floor first. The height of the stilts will result in any fall being worse than normal so protecting the bits of your body that are likely to hit the ground first is a must! Normally any standard sporting gloves will do, just as long as they look like they will withstand being dragged along tarmac. With your wrists, your looking more for support – again any standard wrist supports should do the trick. Check out the large on-line sport websites for the best choice and prices.
Knee Protection.
Knees are another part of the body likely to take a good bashing if (sorry, when) you fall over. Again, due to the extra height, hitting your knee on tarmac can be pretty nasty, so its best to invest in some decent knee pads. Again, shop around the big on-line sports equipment websites for the best deal. Usually the knee pads recommended for motor crossing ect should do the trick.
Head and body protection.
Although these areas might seem as at risk as the others, especially when you are starting out, if you fancy yourself as the next jumping stilts champion chances are you are going to find your feet higher than your head at some point (ie trying to do a flip). A decent helmet is probably one of the most important safety products you can invest in when using jumping stilts. Because of the power and ‘bounciness’ of the stilts it doesn’t take much for you to become off balance and have you head suddenly become lower than your feet. You will generally find a good range of sporting helmets on skateboarding websites, with advice on which ones provide the most protection. When it comes to body protection, the most common products tend to be the armoured jackets and the armoured spine supports. These are really for the extreme stunt enthusiasts and are a must for anybody who wants to be able to do 20 back flips in 20 seconds
